JACK Quartet Performs US Premiere of Matthias Pintscher's Study IV for Treatise on the Veil

On January 23 at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, the JACK Quartet performs Matthias Pintscher's Study IV for Treatise on the Veil. This performance marks the work's US premiere following its world premiere by the Minguet Quartet earlier this year in Salzburg. Study IV is part of Pintscher's cycle based on the art of Cy Twombly, and follows the other works in the series: Study I for violin and cello, Study II for string trio, and Study III for solo violin. Pintscher writes:

Cy Twombly's series of drawings titled Treatise on the Veil includes numerous sketches and two main works. My own Treatise-cycle draws directly on this series of works and pays homage to Twombly, an artist whom I deeply admire, and whose work in the last few years has connected more and more the structural impulses in my own work. "Veil" is haze, fog: a notion that has many different associations with visual and acoustic phenomena, and in composing this music I wish to explicitly explore these associations.

Upcoming events for Matthias Pintscher include the US premiere of towards Osiris by the New York Philharmonic led by Christoph Eschenbach on March 18. Pintscher is currently at work on a song cycle for baritone Thomas Hampson, commissioned by the New York Philharmonic and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. The piece sees its world premiere on April 16 at New York City's Symphony Space as part of the New York Philharmonic's new music series Contact.
