Friedrich Gulda–The Early Recordings Wins MIDEM Classical Award

The MIDEM Classical Awards took place last month at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France and visionary pianist and composer Friedrich Gulda was posthumously honored as his album Friedrich Gulda–The Early Recordings was awarded Best Historical Recording. Available on the Audite label, the album offers a collection of previously unreleased recordings Gulda made for the RIAS Berlin between 1950 and 1959 and features his interpretations of beloved works of the classical piano canon by Beethoven, Debussy, Ravel, Chopin, Prokofiev and Mozart.

Best known as one of the most outstanding pianist of the 20th century, Gulda was revered in both classical and jazz circles. Throughout his professional life he collaborated often with leading jazz figures including Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie and others and his performances and recordings are known for bridging the gap between classical, jazz and other musical idioms to inimitable effect. Gulda was also an esteemed composer in his own right and EAM offers a unique selection of his orchestral and ensemble works for performance. The selections constitute a vital part of Gulda's unique and inspired body of compositions that further cements his status as a true visionary and maverick of 20th-century music.
