World Premieres of New Works by Pawel Mykietyn and Mikolaj Górecki in Poland

Herr Thaddäuss, a new work by Paweł Mykietyn for bass solo, electronics and symphony orchestra, receives its world premiere on December 17 and 19 as part of the Dark Matter(s) concert series, with Wiktor Kociuban conducting the Beethoven Academy Orchestra in the symphonic hall of the Philharmonic in Szczecin, Poland. Featured artists include bass Łukasz Konieczny, Mirosław Bałka, taped voice, Barbara Sieroslawski, recitations, and Mirosław Bałka, scenography/video. The text is based on Adam Mickiewicz ‘Invocation’ from the Polish national epic Pan Tadeusz.

The Delirium Edition: Dark Matter(s) is a series of multimedia concerts featuring 20th- and 21st-century music. Conductor Wiktor Kociuban describes the idea behind the series: "What we see around us is called baryonic matter and constitutes only five percent of the universe; the majority of the universe is made up of dark energy and dark matter which shapes galaxies through its gravitational effects. Just like this invisible scaffolding of the universe, contemporary music, and art in general, is often – unjustly – ignored, although it is a vital element of our existence. It forms the core of our culture. As opposed to art created for the people of the past who responded to different forms of expression and perceived art in a different context, contemporary art belongs to us."

Mikołaj Górecki’s new work, Concerto No. 2 for Flute and String Orchestra, was premiered by the Silesian Chamber Orchestra, led by Robert Kabara, on December 1 and dedicated to soloist Jadwiga Kotnowska. Son of legendary composer Henryk Górecki, Mikołaj Górecki studied with his father at the Szymanowski Academy of Music before attending Indiana University where he earned his Ph.D. He currently lives and works in the United States.
