World Premiere of Zygmunt Krauze’s Opera, Yemaya – Queen of the Seas in Wroclaw

The world premiere of Zygmunt Krauze’s opera, Yemaya – Queen of the Seas was given recently by the Opera House in Wroclaw, Poland in a production directed by Hanna Marasz and conducted by Adam Banaszak. Set to a libretto by Małgorzata Sikorska-Miszczuk, the opera celebrates themes of family, love, friendship, tolerance, and acceptance of oneself and one’s loved ones. Małgorzata Sikorska-Miszczuk notes:

"Yemaya - Queen of the Seas is a story about father and son. Six-year-old historical hero, Omar, loves his father and his father. However, the father does not accept the delicacy and spirituality that his son displays. He believes that in these cruel times that we live in, such qualities are unmanly. Omar, who is brought up without a mother, learns that to his father, who he is is unacceptable. Thus, Omar learns to hide himself from the only person he has in his life. However, to Omar, the whole world has a soul. Omar looks after and talks to the flowers on the balcony. They are his only friends. Yemaya - Queen of the Seas is an opera for adults and children. The world of the main character, little Omar, addresses difficult earthly matters, in which the forces of good and evil clash, as well as a child's imagination, full of fantastic motives."
